Merry Christmas to everyone.
I’ve got a lot going on this weekend and only a small part of it actually has to do with Christmas. Today I am finishing up a script to import all of the forum posts originally from Raven Software into the MODSonline database of posts. Raven Software has decided that the forums they had running no longer fits into their new website design. Perhaps it’s the maintenance that’s becoming a hassle for them. Either way, the modding community stands to lose a ton of information about modding the game made by Raven.
Shortly after hearing about the forums being shut down, I contacted a couple people over at Raven. I asked if they could supply me with a backup of their forums. To my surprise, they obliged. Now I am writing some code to import their data into our forums. Two very differently structured databases take a while to make compatible. This is why it’s taken me two days to do it.
In the end, MODSonline will have just that much more information to supply it’s members. Actually, you don’t have to be a member to take advantage of what is offered. So, it’s great for the whole community of those who love the games that Raven has produced (including Soldier of Fortune, Jedi Knight and Quake 4).
Tomorrow, MODSonair is going to record another episode. This is worth noting because tomorrow is Christmas Eve. It just happens that we can all fit in the 1.5 hours it takes to record an episode. Of course, then the recording goes into production and the rest of the work is mine. However, I’ve come to enjoy working on the show.
On the subject of MODSonair. A couple weeks ago Stryder and I were wondering how many people actually listen to the show. While I don’t remember exactly how many unique listeners there are, I do remember that there were over 21,000 downloads of episode during November 2006. That’s a lot (I mean a lot) more than I expected. Great inspiration to keep on recording and making more shows.
Also, we’ve been getting many more requests for interview episodes. This is an episode in which we interview a mod team. We talk about their mod in detail as well as the work involved. The result is a great episode with details on how to manage your own mod team. We tried this for the first time in November and are lining up more. We’re set to put out one per month through February.
OK. It seems my script is just about done running through the automated test I made. I’ve got to check the results and hopefully finish this forum merger.
